The Complete E3 2011 Report

by Matt Miller on Jun 10, 2011 at 12:00 PM

We summarize all the show's big news, and present our alphabetized list with links to the 125+ games we covered.

Even for those of us who cover video games for a living, E3 can be a confusing time. More than any other time during the year, we're bombarded by new information about the games we love to play.

Throughout the week, we've tried to keep our readers up to date on the important news of each day. If you want the complete picture of gaming at the show, and more importantly what gaming will look like over the next year, our day-to-day recaps are the best place to start.

Day One saw the announcement of Halo 4, Insomniac's new IP entitled Overstrike, more details (including a name) for the PlayStation Vita handheld system, and plenty of on-stage demos for remarkable games like Uncharted 3 and Gears of War 3.

Day Two was Nintendo's day to shine with the announcement of Wii U, a brand-new home console with a dramatic new controller. Big 3DS titles were revealed like Super Mario 3DS and Luigi's Mansion 2, and Wii players finally got a release date for The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. Show floor visitors got a glimpse of huge upcoming games like Bioshock Infinite and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, and Final Fantasy XIII-2.

Day Three brought us dozens of exciting game reveals, trailers, and previews, including closer looks at The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Star Trek, Hitman: Absolution, Kirby Wii, and Uncharted: Golden Abyss.

Day Four saw the end of the show, but the news kept pouring in on games like Star Wars: The Old Republic, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Resident Evil: Revelations, and Soulcalibur V, plus some big surprises like Brothers In Arms: Furious Four and Asura's Wrath.

With the show concluded, we've got a picture of the gaming industry deep in the throes of sequel fever – most of the big upcoming games are part of an existing franchise. On the bright side, many of those sequels look truly remarkable, pushing the boundaries of technology and storytelling as never before. New and untested tech hovers on the horizon with PlayStation Vita and Wii U, even as Kinect and Move struggle to find their place. With the HD consoles in their prime, gamers will be the big winners in the coming months as developers and publishers roll out some of the most advanced and fun games ever made.
