Project Café Becomes Wii U

We’ve all been wondering for a little over a month what Nintendo’s new console would be called. Speculation ranged from Project Café to simply Nintendo. We were way off; it turns out that Nintendo’s new system will be called Wii U.

Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime got onstage to talk about how much everyone (he meant Nintendo) loved the name of the Wii, and that Nintendo’s new system wouldn’t stray too much from that. This new system was a game for "we" meaning everyone, but also for "you" meaning each individual consumer. What do you think of then name Wii U?

  • I... I don't know what to think. I think Nintendo has finally gotten too bizarre for my tastes.
  • The name is... interesting. I'm sure as time goes on, we'll get over how stupid it sounds now.
  • they just turned the wii into a ds.. not a very original idea..
  • Not impressed... do they expect us to swing that thing around like the Wiimote?
  • hey does anyone realize this is just the classic controller mixed with a ds and a wii remote
  • Not concerned with name. Is that device pictured above the entire console or is it just the controller?
  • Is that a picture of the console, or the controller?
  • Sweet jebus I think this is terrible. I know I may be jumping the gun, but I just don't get it. It is a limited range portable Wii? Ididn't like the Wii's software lineup, why one Earth would I want to play the Wii while not on my tv?

That was what I was thinking, then I saw the games and the third partes backing up this thing. Okay Nintendo, I'm listening. Once again you have grabbed me to where I feel forced to buy this thing. Well played, you have beat me yet again.
  • I would like to ask the console: "Wiil U be good?"
  • Not sold, and the game announcements so far don't help.
  • I don't like the name or the controller....ugh but llove the 3ds game lineup

  • I don't mind the name, but I was not impressed by the graphics. I am talking about graphics specifically since that is the one big thing Nintendo needed to do to convince me to buy this new system, and they didn't deliver. Not a single game looked better than what I can already get on the PS3 and 360. The controller, while neat, is not enough to convince me I need to drop money on this system so I can play the same games that I can already play on my other consoles. I wanted to be wowed by the power of the system.
  • Im not that interested

I mean its great that it has tons of 3rd party support and stuff but I don't really think I want to play Battlefield 3 Darksiders 2, Ninja Gaiden 3, etc on that

  • I am starting to think that Nintendo is better off just keeping the code name as the official name. Wii U simply sounds odd. The controller itself is interesting though, however, I would need to touch it in order to see if it actually feels comfortable.
  • I love Nintendo the games amazed me most not the controller though.

  • nice april fools joke you had there nintendo, you nearly got me with that one...wait, it's june!? f...

  • Why nintendo, why are you soooo behind the 360 and PS3? now that theyre finally catching up, I hate the new system, its basically just another wii with HD and a controller that looks really uncomfortable with a screen. Im done with nintendo.
  • I'd missed this article and was wondering with the more recent articles. Anyway the name is still Stupid, but I wasn't going to buy one anyway.

The controller gimmick just makes me think of all the connectivity crap Nintendo was trying to push with GameCube GBA, but that mostly didn't pan out in a worthwhile fashion. This just looks like more of the same, only 'in the box' this time.

Then again I never really 'got' it, so I'm not the right one to ask about Ninty. Whatever they were trying to do with the name as to the supposed deeper meaning, sounds like hippy-dippy fluff to me.
  • I notice how they didn't announce pricing at all. The controller looks like it costs over $100 just by itself. Yea the graphics looked cool for the demos they showed, but it's nothing that I can't get on my PS3 or 360. I guess we'll see where this goes.
