PlayStation Vita Detailed, AT&T Exclusive, And Price

You knew it was coming. You probably knew, with a great deal of certainty, what it was called and most of its capabilities. It's finally official, though: PlayStation Vita is on the way for less than $300.

Sony also announced that it would be partnering exclusively with AT&T for 3G wireless data (and was booed by the E3 audience for its trouble). A WiFi-only model will also be available.

Sony hopes PSVita owners will connect with one another with two services: Party and Near. Party looks like party-based voicechat from the glimpse at the press conference, so no surprises there. Near is a social tool that allows gamers to recommend content, compare trophies, and do other undefined social-type things with other nearby PSVita owners.

PlayStation Vita launches worldwide at the end of this year. U.S. gamers will be able to pick the system up for $299 for the 3G model, or $249 for the Wi-Fi version. Wireless data prices have yet to be announced.

The stats:

  • Multitouch five-inch OLED display
  • Dual analog sticks
  • Sixaxis motion detection
  • Rear touchpad
  • Enough hardware to run the amazing Uncharted software being shown live at the press conference
  • 3G and WiFi models
  • Social tools

Stay tuned for much more on PlayStation Vita, including hands-on impressions from the GI staff here in Los Angeles, as the week goes on.

  • Yes, Yes, and Yes!

  • Looks good! Gotta start saving up. Right after a laptop and a new phone, this is my new most-wanted device.
  • Dumb name, awesome looking system. Too bad it's gonna be super pricey

EDIT: When this article was first posted, they did not have a set price and I assumed it would be upwards of $350, which to me is "super pricey".

I now see they have edited the article and stated the price is $299 which is much less then I expected and a very reasonable price for the kind of technology the Vita is going to offer. Calm down people
  • vita-min, and this lineup kicks ass!
  • If you don't like the name, just call it the PSV.
  • Mmmm Smexy

  • I don't remember hearing the prices but I'm actually really satisfied with it.
  • 250-300 is not bad at all.

  • $250, it's impressive technology, and an already impressive looking line of games has me more than sold! =D
  • Little Big Planet Vita looks incredible, as does Uncharted. They can keep the AT&T contract though. Happy to hear that they're matching the 3DS' price.
  • Few, at least the price didn't  went to high its similar to the original.

  • Nice, same price of 3DS, I'm happy, plan to get both at some point.

  • OMG 250!! Day one purchase
  • Looks pretty sexy for being so cheap

  • So I'm a little confused here. Is the 3G & WI-FI just for social networking, Multiplayer, with PSN, or will it also go the way of PSP GO and not have a disc reader? Like will I have to download every game I want to play and eat up HD space like nobodies buisness? Or will I be able to play games I buy at my local EB games?
  • Oh my god. Yes! Too bad the 3G version requires a data plan. 3G would come in handy, especially with a system like this. Oh well, WiFi's not so bad.

  • The first thing that came to me was that it would cost $400. But $250 for the system it's a pretty good deal.

  • $249!?!?! Hell yeah Sony! Hell yeah! That is what I'm talking about!
  • great conference, amazing price. nuff said.
