Celebrity-Studded Fortnite Tournament Airing Today

by Jacob Geller on Jun 12, 2018 at 12:50 PM

Despite its unprecedented popularity, Fortnite has thus far steered clear of esports. That trend ends today. In a tournament hosted and funded by Epic Games, 50 popular streamers and 50 celebrities will square off to win a million dollar jackpot; a reward that will thankfully go to charity and not into the celebrity's pocket.

The contestants run the gamut, from actors (Joel McHale) to musicians (Ty Dolla $ign) to "The Backpack Kid." Plenty of the streamers participating are famous in their own right; Ninja streamed with Drake a couple months ago and broke all sorts of records.

The tournament will pit teams of two– typically one streamer and one celebrity– against each other. After the  jackpot, the remaining $2,000,000 will be distributed among the other contestants – all for charity, of course.

This contest, although less serious than true esporting events, represents Fortnite's first steps into the world of professionally competitive gaming. More tournaments and and probably fewer celebrities are sure to come.

The stream starts at 3:30 p.m. PT/ 6:30 ET on YouTube, Twitch, Twitter, and presumably every other social media ever made.
