Super Replay – Resident Evil

by Tim Turi on Mar 22, 2016 at 11:15 AM

Today marks the 20th anniversary of Capcom's illustrious survival horror series, Resident Evil. Celebrate the occasion by returning to Raccoon City with us in our side-by-side Super Replay of the original Resident Evil on PlayStation, and the much-lauded remake that launched on GameCube in 2002.

Note: This article was originally published on July 24, 2014, which was 16 years after the in-game events of the original Resident Evil.

Today marks the 16th anniversary of the infamous Spencer Mansion incident. On July 24, 1998, members of the Raccoon City Police Department's S.T.A.R.S. Alpha Team entered a biohazardous, trap-filled mansion nestled in a dense forest of the Arklay Mountains. Many of the RPD's finest died battling the biological abominations roaming the huge estate's dusty halls. To commemorate this important chapter in the Resident Evil series and the horror genre, we're revisiting both the original 1996 PlayStation version of Resident Evil, as well as the excellent 2002 GameCube remake.

For this Super Replay, we'll be switching off between the two versions of the game beginning with the PlayStation original. Each subsequent episode will switch back and forth between the two versions. If you're new to the series, expect a lot of cautious crawling through the monster-infested mansion, careful conservation of ammo and health, and chunks of backtracking to unlock new areas. And as with every playthrough of a Resident Evil game, there are bound to be surprises and close calls that rattle even experienced zombie hunters like us.

Join Andrew Reiner, Jeff Cork, Ben Reeves, Kim Wallace, and me as we compare the two iterations of this groundbreaking horror game back-to-back. Will our extensive experience with both versions make these dual playthroughs a cakewalk, or will the varying traps, enemy encounters, and puzzles throw us off and leave us cowering in a corner with half a clip of handgun ammo and a single red herb?

Watch us embark on the harrowing journey below, and tune in every Thursday and Sunday for new episodes. Check out the latest episode below or catch up with all of the episodes with the video player at the bottom of the page.

You can also watch the full series on YouTube right here.

Update: We don't usually release our blooper videos, but we made it a good way into this episode and figured we would share this bonus 15 episode of our Resident Evil Super Replay with all of you. Our original plan was to play through the Resident Evil Zero missions in Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles. We made it roughly halfway through recording before our Wii died. Here's all of the footage from that recording. We've included the Wii death.
