Grand Knights History Is Vanillaware’s Next Project

by Meagan Marie on Mar 31, 2011 at 04:10 AM

Japanese publication Famitsu has revealed information on the happenings at Vanillaware, the developer most recently known for Muramasa: The Demon Blade and Odin Sphere.

The studio is working on a new role-playing IP for the PSP, called Grand Knights History. Grand Knights unfolds in the world of Ristia, which houses three rival nations: Union, Avalon, and Logres. The player steps into the shoes of a leader in their country of choice, training and customizing warriors. Battles are turn-based, but the publication relates that seamless online multiplayer is a goal.

“The 2D characters will be animated just like in our action games, and we're also challenging ourselves to build a new type of gameplay by fusing online and offline,” said Tomohiko Deguchi, project director at Vanillaware to Famitsu. “Most RPGs up to now involve one person or a group of friends playing together, but we're trying to set up this new kind of game, a full-on war that all the users are connected together in. It's a war RPG where not just one player, not just a few people, but all of the players are drawn together as they fight.”

We don’t know much else about the game, but if Vanillaware’s past work is any indication, it will be beautiful. Grand Knights History has yet to be announced for North America, but will hit retail this summer in Japan.
