I was a big fan of Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and its top-down shooting, co-op puzzle-solving adventure. Thankfully, it looks like the upcoming 4-player follow-up is going to give me even more to love. It feels good to love again.

The basic setup for the game is that the ancient Egyptian god Set and his brother Osiris fought ages ago, but after Set was trapped in another dimension for a few millennia, the world is able to progress in relative peace. However, after Lara Croft and a rival archaeologist named Carter stumble upon the staff of Osiris, they accidentally awaken Set (of course) and put the world in danger of annihilation. Thankfully, Osiris' wife Isis and son Horus are also awakened, and they jump into battle.

Up to 4-players can control Lara and any one of her three to companions as they work to solve puzzles and kill all kinds of ancient Egyptian monsters. However, each character has their own set of abilities and gear. Lara and Carter both have grappling hooks that allow them to climb up hard-to-reach areas. Lara and Carter can even shoot out the grapples and then allow the other players to use them as a tightrope to walk across ravines. Meanwhile, Isis and Horus have a magic bubble shield that will allow other players to stand on top of them and reach high ledges and secrets. These bubble shields also allow Isis and Horus to walk over water and defend incoming attacks.

This all probably sounds a bit like Guardian of Light, and it is, but Temple of Osiris tweaks this formula with new equipment that Lara and her friends can wear to augment their stats and abilities. This equipment comes in two flavors. The first are rings that each individual character can equip to improve their individual stats, and the second are necklaces that unlock team-wide abilities and powers, so when playing with friends it might be a good idea to each wear something different to maximize your ability bonuses.

While Temple of Osiris is a 4-player co-op game, the developer wanted to inject a bit of a competitive spirit into the game. Throughout each level, players will be collecting gems. At the end of each area, each players are dropped into a room full of chest to loot. However, the players with the most gems collected during that level will have the opportunity to open more chests, giving them a greater opportunity to find better loot.

For us, the best treasure of all is friendship. But we’d also be happy if we just got Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris for Christmas. The game releases on December 9 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
