GameStop Lists Its Most Popular Retro Consoles

by Suriel Vazquez on Dec 17, 2016 at 07:37 AM

Back in October, GameStop began accepting trade-ins for retro consoles nationwide after considering a return to the market back in 2012 and offering retro games starting last year.

Now that people have been able to buy retro consoles for over a month, the company released a list detailing which consoles were most popular among its PowerUp Rewards members. The list is made up of several Nintendo consoles, although a few classic Sega consoles make the list. The full list is as follows:

1. Nintendo 64
2. Nintendo Entertainment System
3. Super Nintendo Entertainment System
4. PlayStation
5. Sega Genesis
6. Xbox
7. Sega Dreamcast
8. Sega Saturn
9. Game Boy
10. Game Boy Advance

It should be no surprise the Nintendo 64 is beating out the Super Nintendo; although the latter is often seen as the better console, the generation who grew up on Nintendo 64 games is now at an age where they have the money to relive their nostalgia. We can see two surprises, however: That the PlayStation 2 does not make the list, and that the original Game Boy is more popular than the Game Boy Advance even though the latter can play games from both systems. The listing also does not clarify whether the "Game Boy Advance" listing also includes the Game Boy Advance SP. Still, it's an interesting snapshot of where people's nostalgia is at right now.

Our Take
I would guess the nostalgia factor is why the Game Boy is beating the GBA - the latter may be able to play both, but it doesn't have that "wow" factor playing it on the real deal does. That said, here's a list I'd like to see: what are the 10 most traded-in consoles?
