Wildstar Free-To-Play Reboot Dated For September 29

by Mike Futter on Sep 03, 2015 at 09:32 AM

Carbine’s Wildstar is changing its approach in just a few weeks. The MMO genre is a tough one right now, and NCSoft is giving the sci-fi entry a new lease on life as a free-to-play game.

Beginning on September 29, Wildstar will relaunch as a free-to-play game. Along with the change in business model, Carbine is pushing out a major update called Wildstar Reloaded. This includes new content and revamped game systems.

Anyone with an active subscription when the payment switch happens will receive rewards. Long-time players have other gifts coming their way.

For those that currently subscribe or have received an access key, the second phase of the free-to-play beta kicks off today. If you're interested in testing it out, you can sign up for a code on the official website. For more on Wildstar, check out our previous coverage.

Our Take
Free-to-play isn’t the universally dirty term it used to be. However, publishers need to be careful when making this transition. Longtime players need to feel appreciated, and the model needs to be fair. Games like DC Universe Online have successfully made the transition, and NCSoft’s gambit here could pay off in a big way.
