Skylanders Superchargers Zips Onto iOS, Adding iPhone And iPod Versions

by Mike Futter on Sep 03, 2015 at 03:08 AM

Activision is bringing the full Skylanders experience to iOS devices again this year. Last year saw the ambitious launch of iOS and Android tablet versions, complete with bluetooth portal and integrated physical controller. This year, smaller devices get in on the action.

While there’s no Android version announced yet, Skylanders Superchargers will be available on a wider range of iOS devices. In addition to more recent iPad hardware, you’ll be able to the play on iPhones and iPods.

The full experience, including online co-op and multiplayer (a first for the series even on consoles) will be available on:

  • iPad Air
  • iPad Air 2
  • iPad mini 2
  • iPad mini 3
  • iPhone 5s
  • iPhone 6
  • iPhone 6 Plus
  • iPod Touch 6

For those with iPhone 5, iPhone 5C, iPad 3, or iPad 4, Superchargers will still work. However, you’ll only be able to use the offline functions. These include single-player adventure mode, local co-op adventure, and split-screen racing. You’ll be able to move among devices with a cloud save feature.

Just like last year, there are “instant” characters included. These allow you to play without the figures or portal. This year, that’s one character (Spit Fire) and one vehicle (Hot Streak). Two additional characters (Dive-Clops and Super Shot Stealth Elf) and two more vehicles (Dive Bomber and Stealth Stinger) will be unlockable via in-app purchase.

The iOS version will be available in a starter pack with two characters (Super Shot Stealth Elf and Spit Fire), one vehicle (Hot Streak), portal, and controller on October 25. The console versions arrive on September 20. For more, check out our preview from Gamescom.

Our Take
Last year's mobile version was an extremely impressive feat. With a built-in controller and options for digital characters and traditional figure play, it bridged the gap from console to mobile well. Adding smaller devices this year is ambitious, and I'm interested to see how well the game plays on iPhones and iPods. The screens might be a good fit for the digital characters and touch controls, but using the portal and stand might be too much distance from the screen.
