Street Fighter V Beta Hurricane Kicks Off On July 23

by Mike Futter on Jul 07, 2015 at 07:41 AM

If you’ve pre-ordered Street Fighter V at retail or via PlayStation Network, we have all the details you need for the upcoming beta. Things kick off at the end of this month, with six characters available.

Beta keys will start to go out via email from your retailer of choice on July 20. The client will be available to download immediately at that time. If you ordered through PSN, you won’t get an alert or code. The beta can be downloaded as soon as it appears in the store.

Starting on July 23 at 6 p.m. Pacific / 9 p.m. Eastern, you’ll have access to Ryu, Chun-Li, Bison, and Charlie. Two days later, Birdie and Cammie join the fight.

The beta lasts for five days, with the purpose to test and improve the net code. The reason that two characters are being held back is that Capcom is implementing a new content content delivery system that this will test.

The beta will feature a play loop as follows. Once you press start, you’ll select your character and be placed into the “Grid” training area as you wait for an opponent. Once one is found, it’s off to the versus screen and into the fight.

After the match is over, you’ll get put back in the Grid and the match queue. There’s no local multiplayer, so this is how the beta will work for everyone.

Three different stages will be available during the testing period, including the Bustling Side Street (China), Terminal Station (London, UK), and a new stage called Forgotten Waterfall.

Our Take
Capcom needs to get the net code right the first time. Going through testing like this is an important step in gathering real user feedback. If players can’t match up online at launch, it’s going to mean a Capcom apology tour.
