Xbox’s Phil Spencer Explains Why Screenshots Aren’t Coming Until 2015

by Mike Futter on Oct 23, 2014 at 03:07 AM

The good news is that the oft-requested screenshot feature is still coming to the Xbox One. The bad news is that you won’t be snapping and sharing over the holidays.

Speaking with IGN, Spencer said that the December update is likely to be a bit more streamlined in comparison to recent months. Unfortunately, screenshots aren’t going to be included, as Microsoft wants to make sure the feature meets expectations.

Spencer explains that the team responsible for developing the feature doesn’t want to simply clip a frame from a video. However, a solution is being developed right now.

The November update, which is currently being distributed to preview members, is a substantial update. It includes the ability to set background images from achievement art, restores some elements to user profiles, and creates a clip and achievement showcase for each account holder. It also enhances television with trending programs and deeper Twitter integration.

Our Take
I’m eager for the screenshot feature to arrive, especially since it’s the system-level feature introduced this generation I use the most on PlayStation 4. As I mentioned earlier, getting that onto Xbox One is important for Microsoft, too. Each Tweet from a PS4 with a screenshot helps Sony in the battle for mindshare. I have no doubt that Microsoft will fast-track this for January or February rollout.
