PlayStation Vita Firmware 3.00 Gets Your Handheld Ready For PS4

by Mike Futter on Nov 04, 2013 at 02:31 PM

Sony has announced firmware version 3.00 for the Vita, which will (among other things) get the handheld ready for the PlayStation 4 launch next week. Connection to the new console will be handled through the PS4 Link app that enables remote play and second screen experiences.

Sony recommends that the PS4 be connected via ethernet and that the Vita be close to the wireless access point. For reference, this is how remote play on the PlayStation 3 is handled.

Among the other improvements are a new interface for the friends app, changes to the party app that allow communication to the PS4, the ability to transfer data to and from the PS3 via WiFi (PS4 compatibility for this feature isn’t mentioned and we’ve reached out to Sony), automatic system updates, and a panoramic photo app that makes use of the motion sensing to “look around” the photo.

For more on the new Vita firmware, you can check out the video and head over to the PlayStation Blog. The firmware update is available right now.

Our Take
I’m glad Sony is pushing this out a week and a half in advance of the PlayStation 4 release. This gives people plenty of time before the servers become clogged with PS4 updates. This update brings a host of usability features that will make the Vita even more enjoyable and convenient to use.
