Do You Like Alternate History DLC?

by Matt Miller on Oct 03, 2012 at 11:52 AM

Some recent games are offering a unique experience through DLC – the chance to explore a “what if?” scenario in the game world. Do you like the trend?

Ubisoft revealed today additional details about the upcoming DLC on the way to Assassin’s Creed III. Along with new multiplayer maps and characters, the more surprising reveal was the announcement of “The Tyranny of King George” single-player pack. In this upcoming release, players will witness an alternate history in which George Washington accepts the call to become king, and Connor is forced to turn on his friend to halt the rise of another tyrant.

It sounds like an intriguing concept, and reminds us more than a little of Infamous 2’s Festival of Blood standalone expansion, in which Cole MacGrath becomes a vampire in an alternate timeline from the core game.

Do you like the idea of downloadable content that expands the story sideways in this way, rather than forward or backward?  Or would you rather see developers stick with content that addresses the core canonical story?
