'Iwata Asks' Takes On Ocarina Of Time [laughs]

by Jeff Cork on Jun 29, 2011 at 03:02 AM

The Iwata Asks section of Nintendo's website is a fantastic repository of Nintendo lore. A recent discussion between Shigeru Miyamoto and Nintendo's global president Satoru Iwata focuses on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is fitting considering the game recently made its way to the 3DS. In the discussion, the pair talk about the game's history, with plenty of interesting factoids and anecdotes about its development.

Some of the more interesting revelations include the fact that Miyamoto originally conceived the game taking place in a single area, Ganon's Castle. It would have functioned similarly to Peach's castle in Super Mario 64, with different rooms containing seperate adventures. At the time, Miyamoto wasn't sure that something as ambitious as Hyrule Field would be possible on the hardware, so a hub world was his temporary solution. Fortunately for us (and Epona), Nintendo's engineers were able to make it happen.

Also, in a callback to a previous Iwata Asks, Miyamoto says that the game's roster of odd characters were at least partially inspired by the American television show Twin Peaks. "When I saw that, the most interesting thing wasn't the ins and outs of the story, but what kinds of characters appeared," he says.

Check out the full feature on Nintendo's site. As always, it's a great read and probably the only place Nintendo is willing to spill its secrets so openly.
