Modchip Producer Wins Court Case Against Sony In Spain

by Jeff Marchiafava on Dec 16, 2010 at 07:15 AM

When Sony discovered that international retailers were selling mod chips that would allow users to bypass the the PS3's security protocols and play pirated video games, the company began a series of lawsuits around the globe to block sales of the devices. Today we learned of a considerable setback for Sony, as Spanish courts have sided with the makers of PSJailbreak, requiring Sony to pay damages to affected stores.

The story comes from Nicagamerz, and although our translation may be a little off, it appears a major reason the courts sided with the creators of PSJailbreak is because Sony removed the Linux/Other OS install option from the console. This has led to speculation that Sony may re-enable the option in select markets in order to appeal the decision. While it certainly is a setback for Sony, it's hard to say if the court decision will have any sort of larger impact on the company, as most countries have been ruling in Sony's favor in similar lawsuits.
