E3 2012 Day Two Recap

by Joe Juba on Jun 05, 2012 at 03:28 PM

Today is technically the first day that E3 is open, which means that  a horde of gamers is crowding the LA Convention Center and playing the hottest new games. Here you can find today's highlights from the show floor.

Nintendo's Big Show

The last of the major press conferences took place this morning, and Nintendo unleashed a wave of new assets for games coming to it's upcoming Wii U console. Info and screens for games like Mario and Pikmin dominated the early part of the day. Also, don't forget to read our reaction to Nintendo press conference as a whole.

The Wii U was the center of attention for most of the press conference. We learned that it will support two gamepads and be getting some high-profile ports like Batman: Arkham City and Mass Effect 3. Lego City Stories appears to have been renamed Lego City Undercover, and Nintendo is still trying to reach out to the casual audience with a new Wii Fit and some lame singing game. We also got to see Reggie's disturbing, necrotic zombie face.

The most noteworthy announcements came in game form, with Nintendo showing off Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. 2, New Super Mario Bros. U (nope, not a typo. They're two different games), Luigi's Mansion 2, and Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Nintendo Land was also a memorable announcement, but not necessarily in a good way.

Other Happenings

Nintendo didn't have a monopoly on the day's interesting news. Some companies slipped in announcements while everyone was bustling around the show floor. Deep Silver, for instance, revealed that a new Dead Island is in the works. Sony acknowledged the existence of a Move racing wheel (which appeared but went unaddressed at yesterday's press conference). Speaking of things missing from the Sony press conference, the company confirmed that The Last Guardian, the upcoming title from the studio behind Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, is still alive. Lastly, Samsung is getting into the whole cloud gaming thing.

Next up: Hands-on impressions and new screens and videos for the day's big games.

Hands-On Impressions

The best thing about E3 is the chance to play awesome unreleased games. The Game Informer staff had a chance to do just that today, bringing you their thoughts on some of the biggest upcoming releases. The Skyrim DLC, Dawnguard, is looking pretty great. We also played the latest title from Platinum Games – a Wii U action game currently using the working title Project P-100. You can also read up on Dishonored and PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. Check out our impressions with God of War: Ascension, or read impressions of Sony's upcoming lineup of PSN games

Reviews?

With all of the hype surrounding E3, you probably forgot that Tuesday is also the typical release date for games. Don't worry, though. You aren't missing much today. Pretty much just Inversion, and according to our review, you shouldn't worry about that. It's not good.

Media Blast

If you can't be at E3 waiting in line at the kiosks yourself, you can do the next best thing. Watch a bunch of videos and look at screens for all of the games that you're excited about.
