Riot Games Celebrates Ten Years By Announcing Huge League Of Legends Numbers

by Brian Shea on Sep 13, 2016 at 02:16 PM

Founded in September 2006 as a small indie developer, Riot Games is now a juggernaut of the competitive esports scene. This month, the League of Legends developer is celebrating its 10-year anniversary by revealing that its massive game has 103 million monthly users.

In addition, any player who has jumped into League of Legends in the past 60 days will receive a new summoner icon as well as a Riot Kayle skin. Those players who don't already own Kayle will receive her free of charge. If you happen to own both Kayle and the skin on offer, you'll receive a mystery gift, or the RP equivalent to the mystery gift's value. If you haven't played in a while but still want the gifts, just make sure you play before the end of this weekend.

Riot has also announced a double IP weekend, which starts at 12:01 a.m. Pacific on Friday, September 16, and runs through 11:59 Pacific on Sunday, September 18.

Finally, Riot Games is looking back at its first decade of existence with a special "Thank You" video for its fans. The video features Brandon "Ryze" Beck and Marc "Tryndamere" Merrill looking back at the founding of Riot, how the team got into the world of competitive multiplayer, and the challenges that popped up during the dev's early days. You can watch that video below.

Our Take
Even if you're not a League of Legends player, 103 million monthly users is staggering. If you've been away from League of Legends for a while, now might be a good time to jump back in with the double IP weekend and the rewards on offer.
