A Disgusting Prank We Played On Game Informer Readers

by Andrew Reiner on Nov 06, 2014 at 05:25 AM

When I flip through Game Informer's old issues, I often find myself thinking "I can't believe we did that," and "We could never write that today." One such example is buried on the last page of the August 2002 issue. The item of note is "The Gummi Crunch," a food concoction that blends two distinct flavors and textures.

The article reads:
The Game Informer staff has a gambling problem. Everything (and we mean everything) is somehow or another transformed into a viable bet. In one such incident, Justin bet Reiner that he wouldn't eat a Gummi Bear at the same time as a Jalapeno Cheddar Dorito 3D. Reiner accepted the challenge, and was actually quite pleased with the outcome. Seeing how enthused Reiner was, the entire staff tried this obscure invention, and yes, they loved the flavor and texture of this unusual amalgam. Run out to the store and purchase these items: (1) bag of Jalapeno Cheddar Dorito 3D's, and (1) bag of Black Forest Gummi Bears. For best results, bite off the top of a 3D chip and shove the Gummi inside. Toss it into your mouth and enjoy!!! You'll love it!

The intent of this article was to see if we would get hate mail. In truth, no one on staff enjoyed The Gummi Crunch. Several staffers called it the worst sensation they've ever had in their mouths. The gummi and chip flavors never should have been united. The difference in composition of each also produced a strange chewing sensation.

We thought we would get one or two letters from people that complained about the entry, and questioned our rave review of it. We ended up getting hundreds of complaints. I just learned one of our victim's was Game Informer's own Tim Turi. "I remember chewing the gummi so much that the chip turned to dust," recalls Tim. "It was the kind of thing that got stuck in your molars."
