The Last Jedi Director Rian Johnson Returning To Create New Star Wars Trilogy

by Brian Shea on Nov 09, 2017 at 04:10 PM

Rian Johnson's Star Wars directorial debut is right around the corner with next month's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. While we don't know how it turned out quite yet, Lucasfilm seems confident in his ability to portray the galaxy far, far away on the big screen, as the company today announced that he will be back to helm an all-new Star Wars trilogy.

For the first entry in the trilogy, Johnson will write and direct, with The Last Jedi producer Ram Bergman also returning to collaborate in the same capacity. We don't know the direction of the trilogy Johnson is creating, but we do know that it is separate from the Skywalker saga the mainline films have focused on, and will introduce new characters from a different area of the galaxy. No release windows or further details have been given for the new trilogy.

It was previously announced that Johnson would not return to direct Episode IX, and that instead The Force Awakens director, J.J. Abrams, would return to direct and co-write.
