Facebook Names New Oculus/VR Leader

by Matthew Kato on Jan 26, 2017 at 03:57 AM

Facebook has announced that Hugo Barra will lead the Oculus team and head up all the company's virtual reality efforts.

Barra helped create the Android OS and has worked with Chinese smartphone company Xiaomi.

"Hugo shares my belief that virtual and augmented reality will be the next major computing platform," reads Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg's introductory post for Barra.

Recently, Oculus' Brandon Iribe stepped down as CEO to lead a PC group within the company, and founder Palmer Luckey remains out of the public eye.

Currently Oculus is engaged in a lawsuit by challengers ZeniMax (owners of Bethesda Softworks).

Our Take
Zuckerberg's verbiage about Oculus as a "computing platform" indicates VR's most likely route to survival and success at this time – through applications not related to gaming.
