Destiny’s Xur Not Selling Three Of Coins

by Matt Miller on Dec 23, 2016 at 05:26 AM

Update: Bungie got back with us and pointed toward a post on the Bungie Help Twitter, which confirms that Xur will not be selling Three of Coins this weekend; Bungie is investigating this in-game behavior in regard to how it will affect subsequent weekends, as detailed at the Bungie forums

Original Story: If previous years are any indication, the holiday season is prime time for Destiny players to get some dedicated time with the game. Unfortunately, one of the avenues to getting some fun gifts this week may be closed – Xur, Agent of the Nine, is not selling Three of Coins. The issue has been circulating in the game community this morning, and I’ve confirmed it with a quick glance in-game, as seen in the screenshot above.

The item called Three of Coins has become a staple for many players in their standard playstyle. Purchasable only through Xur, the one-use item gives a chance for an exotic engram to drop in certain situations, like the end of a Crucible match, or the killing of an Ultra enemy, like a Strike boss. Without using a Three of Coins, Destiny’s loot drop system is very unlikely to award any exotics except from very particular situations, like a Nightfall reward or certain raid chests.

For some players, the absence of Three of Coins will be a non-issue this week, since many stockpile the items and have lots left over to spend throughout this week. But for other players who only purchase enough to last one week of play, until Xur shows up on the following weekend, it’s looking like a very un-merry week of exotic farming.

Meanwhile, Xur’s other stock this week isn’t likely to blow anyone away, if only because it's all very familir fare. If you’re looking for a helmet, your friendly tentacle-faced vendor has you covered, as he is selling the Empyrean Bellicose for Titans, Knucklehead Radar for Hunters, and The Ram for Warlocks, not to mention a legacy exotic helmet engram. You can also snag the very solid Plan C fusion rifle, along with most of Xur’s other normal wares, like exotic shards and heavy ammo synths.

Destiny’s community manager, Cozmo, has acknowledged Xur’s somewhat Grinch-like behavior with Three of Coins in a post on the Destiny Reddit community, and has passed along the issue to the Bungie team.

We have reached out to Bungie to find out if we can expect a fix, and we’ll update this story if we hear back.

Our Take
It’s a bummer that some players may not be able to pursue new exotics this week using Three of Coins items, but we suspect this will be a non-issue for many players. At this point, most active Destiny players are likely more interested in completing their record book for The Dawning, Destiny’s winter event, which runs through weekly reset on January 3.
