The Upcoming Tetris Movie Is The First In A Sci-Fi Trilogy

by Blake Hester on Jun 29, 2016 at 11:35 AM

Tetris is taking to the stars, as a new report from Empire indicates that the upcoming film based on the Russian puzzle game will be the first in a sci-fi trilogy. And, according to director Larry Kasanoff, no one has even come close to figuring out just what the film will be about.

Speaking to Empire, the decision to split the film – which currently has the working title Untitled Tetris Sci-fi Project – into three parts came down to how big its story became. “[It's a trilogy] because the story we conceived is so big," Kasanoff explains. "This isn’t us splitting the last one of our eight movies in two to wring blood out of the stone. It’s just a big story."

Talking about just what exactly the Tetris movie is, the director clarifies, "We’re not going to have blocks with feet running around the movie...but it’s great that people think so. It sets the bar rather low!” He goes on to say he wants to keep its story a secret, but does does state, “I came up with the idea as I was thinking about Tetris and the theme of creating order out of chaos... No one has come remotely close to figuring out what we’re doing."

Casting for the Tetris film is currently underway, Empire reports, though back 2014 we made some solid decisions about who we would like to see cast. For a more realistic approach to the story of Tetris, we recently interviewed illustrator Box Brown about his upcoming comic, Tetris.
