Riot Games Purchases Radiant Entertainment, Seth Killian’s Rising Thunder Alpha Closing

by Mike Futter on Mar 08, 2016 at 08:34 AM

Radiant Entertainment is under new ownership. The studio announced today that it has been purchased by League of Legends developer Riot Games.

Radiant has been working on two titles. Stonehearth (no relation to Blizzard’s Hearthstone), is a voxel building game. Rising Thunder, a competitive robot fighting game spearheaded by fighting game veteran Seth Killian, was announced in July 2015.

Stonehearth will remain in development, but the Rising Thunder alpha is closing on March 18. The team is moving onto a new, unannounced project.

Radiant was founded by Tom Cannon, founder of the EVO Championship Series, and twin brother Tony Cannon, creator of peer-to-peer online technology GGPO used in many fighting games. For more on Seth Killian, check out our interview with him from July 2015 and a preview of Rising Thunder.

Our Take
With Seth Killian tweeting that “The future is bright and strong,” it seems that he’s staying aboard. While it appears that Rising Thunder might not make it any further, with Riot’s focus on competitive gaming, whatever this new project is will likely be a fit for the culture and infrastructure that the company has built with League of Legends.
