Hitman Pre-Purchases Canceled On PlayStation Store Due To Significant Configuration Changes

by Mike Futter on Jan 13, 2016 at 10:02 AM

If you pre-purchased Square Enix’s upcoming Hitman on the PlayStation Store, you’ve likely found that your pre-order has been canceled. The publisher says not to worry, and you’ll be able to re-initiate your pre-order soon.

We contacted Square Enix about the issue and the company got back to us promptly. “If your HITMAN pre-order is cancelled, don't panic,” a representative told us via email. “Release date is still March 11th. We're adjusting a few things & will update in a few days. Sorry for any confusion.”

A posting from PlayStation EU support staff, which should be taken with a grain of salt, indicates that something significant has changed with the Hitman packaging. “The publisher has notified us that the configuration of the product you pre-ordered has changed significantly,” writes a PlayStation Online Support employee going by the forum name “KingGobbo.” “As a result we have withdrawn the current pre-order from PlayStation Store and will cancel all existing pre-orders. If you have pre-ordered the game, you will receive email confirmation when your pre-order has been cancelled. A revised pre-order for Hitman will be available on the store soon.”

Square Enix has adjusted how Hitman will be sold once, after confusion about its structure overwhelmed the conversation. The game was delayed from late 2015 into March, and at the same time the publisher decided to front-load more of the content.

We’ll update as soon as more information is available.

Our Take
Sit tight and don’t assume the worst. This could be another shift in the content, but it also could be a change in how the game will be priced (potentially in customers’ favor). It’s a curious situation for sure, and I’m eager to see what these changes are.
