Minecraft Digs Into Wii U On December 17, Nintendo-Themed DLC Coming

Minecraft continues its neverending march toward ubiquity later this month. Nintendo, Mojang, and Microsoft have announced that the sandbox phenom is headed to Wii U this month.

List price for the latest version is $29.99, but it includes a number of packs that carry an additional cost on other platforms. The package includes the following content in addition to the base game:

  • Battle & Beasts Skin Pack
  • Battle & Beasts 2 Skin Pack
  • Natural Texture Pack
  • City Texture Pack
  • Fantasy Texture Pack
  • Festive Mash-up Pack

Additionally, a number of the add-ons available on Xbox and PlayStation systems are making the jump over as DLC. Sixteen packs will be available to purchase at launch. They are:

  • Festive Skin Pack
  • The Simpsons Skin Pack
  • Doctor Who Skins Volume 1
  • Doctor Who Skins Volume 2
  • Star Wars Classic Skin Pack
  • Star Wars Rebels Skin Pack
  • Star Wars Prequel Skin Pack
  • Mass Effect Mash-up Pack
  • Skyrim Mash-up Pack
  • Plastic Texture Pack
  • Candy Texture Pack
  • Cartoon Texture Pack
  • Steampunk Texture Pack
  • Pattern Texture Pack
  • Greek Mythology Mash-up Pack
  • Halloween 2015 Mash-up Pack

Mojang will also be developing Nintendo-themed content for release in the future. Minecraft: Wii U Edition will be out on December 17 via the eShop.

 

Our Take
I'm excited to see how Mojang implements gamepad support on Wii U. Even though this is the nth platform on which the game appears, there's a great opportunity here to make it special with a unique control modality. And let's be honest, we all want a Legend of Zelda mashup pack. Or a Metroid mashup pack. Or a Splatoon mashup pack. Or a...
