Plans For Cancelled Game Boy Color Banjo Kazooie Uncovered

by Parker Lemke on Oct 05, 2015 at 08:01 AM

In 2002, Microsoft bought Rare, but the beloved developer still had a few games in the pipeline for Nintendo’s handheld systems, including the 2003 Game Boy Advance title Banjo Kazooie: Grunty’s Revenge. Now leaked development documents have revealed that Rare originally planned to release an older version of that game on the the Game Boy Color.

Obtained by the cancelled game archive Unseen64, these documents outline a host of cut levels, enemy sprites, and plot points that differentiated the project Banjo Kazooie: Grunty’s Curse from Grunty’s Revenge. In them you can see how Rare had contemplated turning Banjo into a toaster and other comedic objects as a joke. Check out the video below for a deeper look at the game.

Details of unreleased Rare games have surfaced online in the past, including an hour of footage from Dinosaur Planet for the N64, which later morphed into Star Fox Adventures.
