Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn Hits Four Million Users, Offers Limited Free Login

by Jon Gregory on Feb 26, 2015 at 11:11 AM

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn now has 4 million registered accounts, and Square Enix is letting anyone who has previously paid for the game back online for free.

Beginning tomorrow, February 27 at 12:00AM PST, A Realm Reborn's doors will reopen to past subscribers, allowing them to play for free until March 9. The game's four million registered accounts excludes those created as part of free trials, but the free play time only applies to players who have previously purchased the game.

The MMO’s free login campaign launches alongside a new patch that adds extra items, mini-games, and new world events.

Our Take
While four million registered accounts isn’t the same as four million active subscriptions, it is still a fraction of World of Warcraft’s 7.4 million (correction: over 10 million) active user figure. Still, getting that many people to buy into a subscription MMO for any period of time is impressive in today’s landscape.

This is an enticing offer for those who previously subscribed. On top of compelling people to come back to the game ahead of its upcoming expansion, the option to play for free allows fans with lapsed subscriptions to try out the Manderville Gold Saucer content without having to commit financially.
