No New Need For Speed In 2014

by Jeff Marchiafava on May 06, 2014 at 11:55 AM

After more than 10 years of annual releases, EA is giving its popular racing series the year off.

In today's financial earnings call, EA confirmed that Ghost Games is currently working on a new take for the Need For Speed series, but that players won't be seeing it in 2014. Ghost Games was given the keys to the long-running franchise for last year's Need For Speed Rivals, which received positive scores for its seamless blend of online and offline racing. The Need For Speed series has seen annual releases since 2002's Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, with some years receiving multiple spin-off entries from different developers.

Our Take
I was a fan of Need For Speed Rivals, and am looking forward to what seeing what Ghost Games decides to do next with the series. I'm also glad EA isn't pressuring the developer to churn out another game this year – looking over the franchise's long and crowded release history, providing racing fans with a breather may not be a bad call.
