Nintendo Wins Big On Black Friday

by Jim Reilly on Nov 28, 2011 at 09:05 AM

Nintendo hit a home run over the holidays. The company annouced massive sales for its major software releases.

In the United States alone, Super Mario 3D Land sold more than 500,000 units since launching on November 11, making it the "fastest-selling portable Mario game" in Nintendo's history. Additionally, the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword sold 535,000 copies in the U.S. since launching last Sunday.

"What this has been able to do is drive our Nintendo 3DS business in only eight months to surpass the full first year volume of the original DS and we still have the bulk of the holiday to go," Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime told USA Today, "and we still have the launch of Mario Kart 7 (out Dec. 4) to continue driving our full-year sales on Nintendo 3DS."

The Nintendo Wii is still chugging along. During Black Friday, Nintendo says it sold more with than 500,000 Wii consoles. The company did not provide sales numbers for the Nintendo 3DS. Fils-Aime said 3DS sales tripled (by 325%) compared with sales the week of Nov. 6, the week before Super Mario 3D Land made its debut.
