Moments: Bald Bull's Charge

by Dan Ryckert on Jun 29, 2012 at 08:37 AM

Our last Moments entry involved Shadow of the Colossus, which seems on the surface to have next to nothing in common with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out. However, both games boil down to what is essentially a series of boss fights. While Iron Mike himself is easily the most intimidating of all of Punch-Out's fighters, there are many moments in the NES classic that can still raise the heart rates of nostalgic gamers. Chief among them is the moment Bald Bull steps back against the ropes and prepares his trademark charge.

Little Mac faces off against the Turkish giant twice, and the devastating charge is a part of his arsenal during both bouts. At certain points during the fight, Bald Bull takes several steps back, ducks down, and prepares his bull charge. He takes several short (but fast) hops forward, then throws a massive uppercut at the player. If he connects, Little Mac hits the canvas immediately. However, perfect timing on the player's part can result in a much more desirable outcome.

By throwing a body blow at the exact right moment, you can catch the brute at the last second. His eyes widen, his torso tightens up, and he falls to the ground with a hilarious animation and sound effect. To this day, it's one of the most satisfying feelings I've ever experienced in a video game.

To see us face Bald Bull and his charge head-on, go to the 15:30 mark in our Replay of Mike Tyson's Punch-Out below.
