Halo Infinite's six-minute trailer at E3 this year was already filled with ambiguity, and a recent discovery proves it. Across Twitter and ResetEra, fans have been speculating about the discovery of an audio clip linked to a QR code hidden in the trailer, discovered by @xeryal

The 40-second audio clip begins with mostly ambiance and the sound of echoing footsteps, until Cortana begins speaking. "This ... This is part of me," she says. " I  don't know why ... I don't know how, but it is me." Fan speculation began, and with it came the complicated lore compiling, which I will try to explain here.

During the events of Halo 4, Cortana began a process of advanced degradation called rampancy. During her rampancy, there were many fragments of her that she used to hold the The Didact back long enough for Master Chief to defeat him. The speculation is that one of these fragments did not return to Cortana before she was saved from her rampancy by forerunner technology, and that the audio clip hints at two Cortanas, one from Halo 5 and one that was not a part of Halo 5.

This is merely speculation, and what happens to Cortana and the meaning of this clip are still yet to be revealed. It is an exciting secret though, and causes one to wonder what else we have yet to find. Halo Infinite is planned for release in 2020 as a launch title for the upcoming Project Scarlett
