Friday Rock Recs: Scott Weiland & The Wildabouts – "Blue Eyes"

by Brian Shea on Jun 24, 2016 at 09:00 AM

With this Friday Rock Recs series, I typically steer more towards lesser-known groups and emerging artists, but I also want to highlight deep cuts from well-known artists. That's precisely what I'm doing with this week's entry, as I look at one of my favorite tracks off of the final solo album released by the late Stone Temple Pilots/Velvet Revolver frontman, Scott Weiland.

While Weiland was most known for his deep rock vocals and lively stage performances, if you dive into any Stone Temple Pilots, Velvet Revolver, or Scott Weiland solo album, you'll find a multitude of beautiful tracks showcasing the singer's range to the softer end of the spectrum. "Blue Eyes" quickly emerged as one of my favorite tunes from late in Weiland's career. The track shows excellent pop sensibilities and features heartfelt lyrics. The sentimental, hope-filled lyrics of the verses perfectly complement the triumphant hugeness of the chorus to give it a great sound that satisfies even on repeated listens.

The Wildabouts were formed around the time of Weiland's dismissal from Stone Temple Pilots. In March 2015, the day before the Wildabouts' first album Blaster released, guitarist Jeremy Brown was found dead. Weiland was said to have taken the death hard, which could have potentially triggered the notoriously troubled singer to fall into old habits. Weiland was found dead on his tour bus outside of Minneapolis in December 2015 while on tour with the Wildabouts in support of Blaster. His talent may be overshadowed by his demons in the eyes of many, but for me, there have been few more gifted and charismatic frontmen in the history of rock music.
