Friday Rock Recs: The Struts – "Kiss This"

by Brian Shea on Jun 17, 2016 at 10:00 AM

Who would have thought that in 2016, we'd get see an album with the potential to revitalize the glam rock scene? That's exactly what has happened with the U.S. reissue of The Struts' Everybody Wants. The genre might not be booming just yet, but the potential is there, as The Struts have been occupying high positions on the charts with songs like "Could Have Been Me" and "Kiss This." While European fans were treated to this album (with a few different tracks, mind you) in 2014, the 2016 version of Everybody Wants features songs that range from fun and upbeat to somber and heartfelt.

The Struts wear their influences on their sleeves, with an obvious adoration of artists like Queen and David Bowie. Even Joe Elliott, the lead singer of Def Leppard, has sung the praises of The Struts, telling radio personality Eddie Trunk on his podcast that The Struts are the best thing he's heard in a long time. I had the chance to see The Struts perform at First Avenue here in Minneapolis and it was easily one of the best shows I've been to in years. The band plays extremely tight, and frontman Luke Spiller clearly gives it his all every second he's on stage.

The song that got me into The Struts was "Kiss This," which I heard on the radio on the way into the Game Informer offices one day. While it's not my absolute favorite track on the album, it's certainly up there. The reason I chose it as this week's Friday Rock Rec is that I think it's the best representation of who The Struts are as a rock group. Check out "Kiss This" below, and if you want to learn more about The Struts, check out my recent interview with Spiller.
