Friday Rock Recs: Heaven's Basement – "Can't Let Go"

by Brian Shea on May 20, 2016 at 10:55 AM

This week's Friday Rock Recs looks at one of my favorite bands to come out of the last decade of music. I found Heaven's Basement because I was a fan of another band that I will probably feature in Friday Rock Recs at some point called Roadstar. When Roadstar broke up in 2007 (just over a week after their second album hit) several members stuck together and formed Heaven's Basement. While most of the founding members of Heaven's Basement (including the majority of those who came from Roadstar) have left, the group continued releasing small EPs with a rotating cast of musicians. The band finally found some stability, and in 2013 it released its debut LP, Filthy Empire.

Filthy Empire brings an astoundingly strong tracklist that I can listen to from start to finish without any problem. "Can't Let Go" isn't my favorite track on the album, but it likely has the broadest appeal that you'll find on the record, which is why I'm able to recommend it so easily.

Sadly, in late 2015 vocalist Aaron Buchanan released a statement that he was leaving Heaven's Basement to pursue other projects in the music industry. Buchanan only just recently revealed what he's working on – a band called Aaron Buchanan and the Cult Classics. Shortly after Buchanan's departure, Heaven's Basement played with Danny Worsnop of We Are Harlot (and formerly of Asking Alexandria) on vocals, but a permanent solution has not been revealed.

Check out "Can't Let Go" below, and if you want to hear more from these guys, I'd recommend picking up the entire Filthy Empire album. It's easily one of my favorite hard rock albums in a long time.
