Zelda Producer Teases Majora's Mask Details In Link Between Worlds

by Kyle Hilliard on Oct 13, 2013 at 06:33 AM

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has teased something related to Majora's Mask in the upcoming The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds.

Aonuma made an appearance at the New York Comic Con to talk about the new Zelda coming to 3DS, and during a fan Q and A, he offered a strange tease related to Majora's Mask. When a fan asked about the possibility of a Majora's Mask remake Aonuma replied, through a translator, “If you play A Link Between Worlds, you may get an answer. You might find some information.”

This isn't the first time Aonuma has spoken ambiguously about Majora's Mask, nor is it the first time a connection between A Link Between Worlds and Majora's Mask has been apparent. In the above image, which appeared during the Zelda section of a recent Nintendo Direct, keen-eyed observers noticed that Ravio has the mask displayed in his shop. You can see it the bottom-right corner of the image.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is coming to 3DS on November 22. For the game's latest trailer, head here.

Our Take
Majora's Mask was Aonuma's first Zelda game where he was credited as a director, so it is an important part of his history with the series. I don't know if this is a hint at a remake or an HD re-release, or just a hint that there will be a story connection between the two games. Whatever it is, Majora's Mask is one of the Zelda universe's most intriguing, dark, and mysterious items. I would love an excuse to play the game again on my 3DS similarly to the Ocarina of Time remake, but I also wouldn't say no to a complete remake for Wii U. Remaking Wind Waker was apparently very successul, so I don't think Nintendo is turned off by the idea.
