E3 2012 Day Three Recap

by Matt Helgeson on Jun 06, 2012 at 04:32 PM

As the dust from the press conferences settles, E3’s focus turned to the games on the show floor. The Game Informer staff was all over the show floor, gathering hands-on impression and behind-the-scenes information on many of the convention’s biggest games.

News Bits

Though the big announcements were made during the press conferences that took place in the first two days of the show, a few interesting news stories did surface today. Game Informer’s Kyle Hilliard got to try out some unique Wii U functionality, the Panorama View, and did a report on how it works. While it looks like you’ll be using your Wii U controller to look around, you’ll need to keep an eye on the controller’s battery life, which surfaced on Nintendo’s Japanese site today.

Speaking of interesting peripherals, some ambitious developers are actually working on levels for Portal 2 that will be compatible with Sony’s Move controller. It’s a really good concept that seems perfect for the game.

In other news, Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo has a…let’s say…unique definition of the term “launch window,” race babe Danica Patrick has partnered with Sega (does that mean we can stop those annoying GoDaddy.com ads?), and Activision is bringing one of the biggest mobile games of all time to home consoles. And if you don’t have a home console, Microsoft is expanding its $99 Xbox sales program (with 2-year contract agreement) to new retailers. But hey, at least Microsoft bothered to talk about its console, which is more than we can say for Sony and the Vita.

Bonus Funnies

While this week is all about E3, there were a couple of notable videos from the entertainment world that had a tie to video games – and both are very well done. First off, Funny or Die posted this video of The Big Bang Theory’s Kelly Cuoco doing a spot-on parody of those overly excitable, so-called “nerd” girls that are so popular in television coverage of video games. Olivia Munn could not be reached for comment.

Video games and movies have traditionally been a match made in hell, but it appears that Disney might finally be getting it right. In this new trailer for Wreck-It Ralph (starring the voice of John C. Reilly), we see copious video game references and humor that actually isn’t terribly embarrassing! Crazy.

With that, have a great day and we’ll be back with another recap tomorrow night.
