Developer Red Barrels Outs Outlast As Free PlayStation Plus Game

by Jeff Marchiafava on Jan 13, 2014 at 11:57 AM

We're still in the midst of January's free PlayStation Plus games, but that hasn't stopped indie developer Red Barrels from giving us an idea of what's coming next month.

In a post on its official Facebook page, Red Barrels announced that the PS4 version of Outlast would be free for PlayStation Plus users in February. Given the game's February 5 release date, we're guessing it will be Sony's first offering of the month.

Outlast released to generally positive reviews last fall. Ben Reeves characterized the game as a terrifying albeit limited survival horror experience that will give fans of the genre a weekend of entertainment. Red Barrels is also currently working on DLC for the game that features a new protagonist, but so far no release date has been given.

For more on what to expect next month, read Reeves' full review, or check out our episode of Test Chamber.

Our Take
Sony has been aggressively courting indie developers, and its efforts have been paying off. Games like Resogun, Contrast, and Warframe helped flesh out the PS4's launch, as well as the company's Instant Game Collection. Here's hoping Microsoft's ID@Xbox initiative proves equally fruitful, for developers and gamers alike.
