FIFA 14's Ultimate Team Mode Crosses Generations

by Matthew Kato on Jul 23, 2013 at 09:41 AM

Like Madden announced earlier today, players of FIFA 14 on the current-generation of systems will be able to continue their progress when the soccer game hits the next-gen systems. Unlike Madden, however, the relationship between the two generations for the mode will be more of a two-way street.

If you start playing FIFA 14's Ultimate Team mode on the current systems, you can not only transfer all your cards and items (players, items, coins, trophies, etc.) over if you buy the next-gen consoles (from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4), but you can also keep playing the mode going forward on either generation and any future progress will be reflected on either console.

Furthermore, when you make the switch you will retain your division standing in Seasons mode. Your status between the two generations of consoles will be recognized after you finish your season and tournaments on the current system. No matter which console you play on, the PlayStation and Xbox platforms will share a common auction market that binds their current- and next-gen systems.

You will also have a one-time option to transfer over your FIFA Points (as opposed to coins) from the Xbox 360 to the Xbox One and between the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

This Ultimate Team interplay requires an online connection, PSN or Xbox Live account, and an EA Origin account that used for both consoles involved.

For more on the mode in FIFA 14, take a look at its upgraded chemistry system.

FIFA 14 comes out for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (as well as a bunch of other systems) on September 24, and on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One some time later this year.

Our Take
I loved the Madden announcement earlier today, so it's even cooler that FIFA is letting you keep ever more in the transition. Some have questioned why anyone would own both current- and next-gen versions of FIFA or Madden, but given you can get a few months head start on playing a new product by picking up the current-gen version, for sports fanatics like me that's too long to go without.
