Firaxis is showing off the next member of XCOM: Enemy Unknown's alien menagerie: the Berserker. The XCOM organization's mission to defend Earth from interstellar invaders is going to be in serious jeopardy once these start showing up. The first video showing off the game stars the Berserker alongside the developers' explanation of XCOM's core gameplay.

Normally, when confronted with an extraterrestrial menace, your first response as XCOM commander is to duck your team behind cover and set up firing angles to keep your soldiers from being too exposed to the enemy. That's a good way to get killed when facing a Berserker.

As a melee-only enemy (in contrast to every other alien shown so far), Berserkers have a number of ways to close the distance. Even on the player's turn, he can move toward an XCOM operative who damages him, which changes how you'll have to plan to bring him down. More impressive, however, is his Bull Rush ability.

When a Berserker activates Bull Rush, it doesn't matter who is between it and his target – be it the solid wall of a building or any other obstruction, anything in its path gets obliterated. Which is bad news for anyone on the receiving end of it, as even the hardiest of XCOM soldiers won't last long in melee range of a berserking Berserker.
