Sonic Boom is the third and final game of the partnership between Sega and Nintendo, with Sonic bringing along Knuckles, Amy, and Tails as playable characters in this 3D action title.

Camaraderie is important in the game, and Sonic will always have at least one other character with him, if not all three. This is key in making your way through levels, as part of an environmental puzzle, for instance, may call upon a particular character's skills. Sonic has his speed and a homing attack, Knuckles burrows underground, Amy has a large hammer she can spin for area attacks, as well as a triple-jump to reach special places, and Tails can glide and has a robot buddy who attacks enemies. As you upgrade later in the game, characters will work together for finishing moves or to cause more damage together.

Each character can also use his/her enerbeam whip, which was used frequently in the demo I played. I used it to pull environmental objects for puzzles, to remove shields from foes, as a zipline, and in one sequence early on in the game, to grab and whip robots at a giant boss. Also handy is the Wii U GamePad, which is used for Investigation Vision mode.

Sonic Boom is a prequel to the upcoming TV show, but how it ties into the 3DS game at all is unknown. Sonic Boom for the Wii U comes out this fall.
