Despite Overwatch simply being a multiplayer shooter, Blizzard is applying its signature world-building to the project. The first in a series of animated shorts is out today showing how hyper-intelligent ape Winston is spending his time following the team’s demise.

We learn that the world rejected Overwatch, making the group’s operations illegal. This reminds us a bit of Pixar’s outstanding The Incredibles, which features a world that left superheroes behind.

Overwatch is Blizzard’s entry in the rapidly growing “hero shooter” genre. It’s going to be a busy year for these games, with Gearbox’s Battleborn and Hi-Rez’s Paladins just two of the titles vying for control of the new game type.

You can read more about Overwatch in our most recent preview. It’ll be out on May 23 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
