Ever wanted to abandon common sense and throw caution to the wind? A reckless Disregard for Gravity gives you a chance to do just that.
Base jumping is a form of protest in the world that Dejobaan Games has crafted. In the far future, real-estate has expanded upwards instead of outwards and now cities sprawl high into the sky. Unhappy with this infringement, thrill seekers use rooftops as literal and figurative platforms for their cause.
Controls are simple and intuitive, as Reckless’ concept is easy. Using WASD and the mouse to aim, your goal is to jump off tall buildings and avoid hitting anything solid. At the end of your jump, deploying your parachute and hitting the target is a plus. That’s the easy part. It’s what you do mid-air that’s exciting.
The primary way to increase your score while falling is through hugs and kisses. Kisses are measured by the number of building faces you brush past while falling, making it more productive to snake around the perimeter of several buildings than stay in one place. Hugs, on the other hand, track the amount of time you stay in close proximity to a single building, so sitting still is the best approach in this regard.
Keeping with the humor that the name implies, solid freefalls result in a high score and reward you in teeth, which can be spent to unlock new levels. As you get more comfortable with the controls you will start to take more risks, and as such, earn bigger rewards. We found ourselves memorizing the vertical layout of each level, then replaying it in order to maximize our score. Jumps become increasingly complex as you progress, eventually requiring you to weave in and out of buildings in order to avoid various city infrastructure.
Everything about A Reckless Disregard for Gravity screams anarchy. Spectators watch your fall and enjoy being acknowledged. To increase your score you can fly past groups of fans (blue) and give them the thumbs up, or conversely brush by gathering protestors (red) and give them the finger. The civil disobedience doesn’t stop there, you can also venture close to buildings and tag them with spray-paint for extra points.
A Reckless Disregard for Gravity is an utterly addictive and unique game that lets you shelve common sense without the horrific consequences. One jump and you’ll be back for more.
