Niantic Announces Pokémon GO Community Day

by Imran Khan on Jan 12, 2018 at 02:03 PM

Niantic, developers and maintainers of Pokémon GO, have announced a monthly Community Day for fans to meet up to catch special event Pokémon.

Announced today on the game blog, Community Day is a call to players to meet up at local parks and landmarks to meet other Pokémon GO players and catch Pokémon that have exclusive moves unavailable to normal catches.

The first of these Pokémon comes on the next Community Day, January 20, and is the small-l legendary Surfing Pikachu. Surfing Pikachu, simply a Pikachu that knows Surf, has been well-known among Pokémon fans for years. Pokémon Yellow had a Pikachu minigame that showed Pikachu on a surfboard, which could then be used to Surf like a Water Pokémon over surfable areas in the game. It was even referenced in the Pokémon cartoon.

During Community Days, players will get increased XP or Stardust, and Lure Modules activated when trying to catch event Pokémon will last for three hours.

Here are the hours for the different regions:

The Asia-Pacific region: January 20, 2018, from 12:00 P.M. to 3:00 P.M. JST (GMT +9)
Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and India: January 20, 2018, from 10:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. UTC (GMT +0)
The Americas and Greenland: January 20, 2018, from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. PST (GMT -8)

Pokémon GO recently cut off older iOS devices, focusing more on iOS 11. It is also available on Android phones.

Our Take
After the technical issues caused by Pokémon GO Fest, it makes sense to try something similar but massively decentralized.
