Report: Overwatch Anniversary Event, Game Of The Year Edition Likely On The Way

by Kimberley Wallace on May 11, 2017 at 03:18 PM

Recently, tiny hints and leaks have indicated Blizzard is planning something to mark the one-year anniversary of its popular shooter Overwatch, and fans have been waiting on pins and needles for details. Yesterday when a fan asked on Twitter about a date for an anniversary event, the official Twitter account responded, "No timing details yet," indicating that news is on the way. Today, True Achievements found some more information in its recent scan of the Xbox Live Marketplace, discovering anniversary loot boxes and a Game of the Year edition.

The store description for the Game of the Year edition says it comes with the full game, 10 bonus loot boxes, origin skins for five heroes, a baby Winston pet for World of Warcraft, the Tracer hero to use in Heroes of the Storm, and more. The expected release date for this edition is listed as May 23.

As for the anniversary loot boxes, the product description indicates that there will be over 100 new goodies available to commemorate the occasion, and they will be available to purchase or earn in-game until June 5. Similar to past events, every loot box contains up to four cosmetic items, including at least one skin, spray, highlight intro, emote, victory pose, player icon, or voice line.

Blizzard is on a roll with Overwatch. Its recent Uprising event was played 145 million times and its player base has passed over 30 million. Overwatch has maintained its title of Blizzard's fastest-growing franchise. Sounds like some celebrating is in order.

Our Take
While this has yet to be confirmed, it seems pretty likely that all of this is true. Bring on a new event and more cosmetics, please! The events have no doubt been successful and a highlight of the Overwatch experience, and it's fun to think how I'm still so invested in this game almost a year later. Hopefully, we'll get another cool mode on top of the reported cosmetic items. I'm also excited to see what Blizzard comes up with for skins.
