by Jordan Leendertsen on Mar 01, 2017 at 10:00 AM

Although the game has had its ups and downs, It doesn't look like Pokémon Go is going anywhere soon. As reported by Polygon, developer Niantic announced today that the mobile game has passed 650 million downloads. This news came during Google Developer Day at the 2017 Game Developers Conference.

Some other interesting tidbits reported include the fact that players have now walked more than 8.7 billion kilometers (5.4 billion miles) while playing the game.

Today also happens to be Pokemon Day, and is the 21st anniversary of the franchise. In honor of the occasion, Pokemon Go players can catch a special birthday-themed Pikachu for a limited time. Our Take
While the number is undoubtedly impressive, 650 million downloads shows minimal growth from the 500 million touted a few months after release. Still, if Niantic continues to support the game like it has recently,  by adding in more Pokemon and expanding the gameplay variety, Pokémon Go could continue to be going strong for a good while.
