HTC Launches Vive Studios To Develop First-Party VR Titles

by Elise Favis on Dec 08, 2016 at 06:25 AM

HTC announced today that it's debuting Vive Studios, which will focus on developing first-party VR content for the HTC Vive headset. Along with this news, HTC revealed Arcade Saga, an upcoming collection of three arcade titles in first-person 3D, including shooting gallery where you equip a bow-and-arrow, a Breakout-style game, and table tennis. Arcade Saga is being developed by HTC's internal studio 2 Bears.

Vive Studios will produce first-party content via its internal developers, though they also plan to have partnerships with external developers. HTC will be not just be developing games, but also VR content for education, film, design, real-estate, sports, location-based entertainment centers, and more.

For more on the Vive, read about how it has sold over 140,000 units as of late October.

Our Take
This seems like a step in the right direction to help the Vive contend in the VR race against the likes of Oculus, Samsung, and PlayStation. Particularly since Oculus and PlayStation are developing their own first-party titles, it seems like a smart move for the Vive to follow a similar approach.
