Report: HTC Vive Has Sold More Than 140,000 Units

by Michael Leri on Oct 20, 2016 at 08:10 AM

Cher Wang, an HTC Vive representative, told Chinese VR website 87970 that a total of 140,000 Vive headsets have been sold to date. In August, the Vive was sitting around 100,000 total units sold.

This coincides with reports of a rise in HTC's revenue from August to September. Selling more VR units could easily be the catalyst for an increase in revenue.

Although, 140,000 units for Sony might not be as well received. The recently launched (and reviewed) PlayStation VR is estimated to sell 2.6 million units by the end of the year, which might seem a bit high. However the dramatically lower cost of entry and level console playing field might make this a more reachable number for PSVR.

Our Take
That number may not seem like that much but, given the overall entry price, required floor space, and niche status of the product, it's a respectable number. The Vive is an impressive piece of hardware and VR as a whole will benefit if the Vive does well. As the saying goes, the rising tide raise all VR headsets.
