Official Fear Effect Kickstarter Campaign Announced With Teaser Trailer

by Matthew Kato on Apr 07, 2016 at 04:53 AM

Square Enix has given the greenlight to French indie developer Sushee to go ahead with a Kickstarter for Fear Effect Sedna – a different take on the series' gameplay.

The developer Sushee has put up a little teaser trailer for the project, and Eurogamer has some additional details on Sedna, which will use an isometric camera as players coordinate the actions of up to five characters to get the job done. Sushee says it was inspired to turn in this direction by Harebrained Scheme's Shadowrun Returns.

Hana and Rain return in Sedna, which takes place four years after the unreleased Fear Effect 3. Also returning to the franchise is writer and director John Zuur Platten, who aims to not only continue the story he helped create, but also steer it away from the focus on the sexuality of Hana and Rain that occurred in Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix (directed by Stan Liu).

This reprisal of the series is thanks to IP-holder Square Enix's Collective program, whereby the company puts forth game pitches from indie developers for the community to vote on. Those that succeed in the process will go onto a crowdfunding phase and from there hopefully a full game with Square Enix publishing.

Last year, Square Enix announced that it was accepting developer pitches for Square Enix's Fear Effect, Gex, and Anachronox properties through the Collective program.

Fear Effect Sedna's Kickstarter program starts April 12. Should the game reach its €100,000 goal it is expected to come out on PC in mid-2017, with console versions as a stretch goal.
