Popular Card Game Exploding Kittens Out On iOS

by Javy Gwaltney on Jan 21, 2016 at 04:04 AM

A digital adaptation of Exploding Kittens, a multiplayer card game illustrated by Matthew Inman, the creator of the popular webcomic The Oatmeal, is coming to iOS on January 21. The Kickstarter campaign for Exploding Kittens holds the record for being the most backed project in the history of the platform, netting 219,382 backers who contributed more than 8 million dollars to the project.

The developers describe the game as a "Russian-Roulette-style" game:

In this highly-strategic, multiplayer, kitty-powered version of Russian Roulette, players draw cards until someone draws an Exploding Kitten, at which point they explode, they are dead, and they are out of the game — unless that player has a Defuse card, which can defuse the Kitten using things like laser pointers, belly rubs, and catnip sandwiches. All of the other cards in the deck are used to move, mitigate, or avoid the Exploding Kittens.

The digital version will be available for purchase on the App Store for $1.99 and will have cosmetic microtransactions that will let players customize their avatars. There is no word on whether an Android port is in the works.

Our Take
As someone who's generally dug The Oatmeal's output and has been interested in the game since its highly publicized crowdfunding campaign but not enough so to grab a physical copy, I might have to give this a spin on my phone.
